
THE ZHAI「宅」
"ZHAI" is the pinyin for the Chinese character「宅」, meaning residence or dwelling. The phrase "to dwell in China"「宅」 originates from an inscription on the He Zun, a national treasure-level bronze vessel from the Western Zhou Dynasty unearthed in Henan Province. This inscription represents the earliest known appearance of the characters for “China.” From a simple yearning for a peaceful and prosperous life to building a rich material and spiritual world centered around the concept of "home," the Chinese people have never ceased their exploration of the essence of life. This has given rise to a profound, diverse, and richly expressive system of Eastern aesthetics in daily living.
In September 2023, "Sino-European (Suzhou) Design Development Co., Ltd." ("Sino-European Design"), jointly established by Suzhou Famous City Protection Group and Shanghai Chuwei Art Development Co., Ltd., signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the French exhibition company SAFI in Paris, France. The agreement concerns the joint establishment of the "China Intangible Cultural Heritage & Crafts Pavilion" at the MAISON&OBJET Paris Fashion Home & Design Show. Sino-European Design officially became theexclusive authorized agency in Mainland Chinafor the "M&O China Intangible Cultural Heritage & Crafts Pavilion", responsible for the actual operation of the brand 「THE ZHAI」 (China's Origin).

Paris Fashion Home & Design Show
Founded in 1995, it ranks among Europe's three leading commercial fairs and operates under the management of the French exhibition company SAFI. Hailed by media as thepremier home design exhibition bridging international interior design and lifestyle communities, M&O is held twice annually in Paris, France – every January and September.

The exhibition attracts:
• Participants from over 160 countries
• 3,000+ brands
• More than 100,000 industry professionals annually
Renowned designers, manufacturers, buyers, brands, and media from around the world come together to showcase the latest products and design trends across a wide range of categories, including home furnishings, décor, furniture, lighting, tableware, gifts, stationery, and more.

During the exhibition, over 2,000 media outlets and journalists from around the world are in attendance. On social media, communities with millions of followers actively engage with the event. At the same time, platforms such as M&O in the City and Paris Design Week help extend M&O’s reach to new and broader audiences.


Featured City: Suzhou
The selection of a Featured City serves as a central curatorial pillar for 「THE ZHAI」 (China's Origin). In line with its annual exhibition plan, THE ZHAI invites a city each year to serve as the Featured City. This partnership is built on a thoughtful selection process that considers cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and industrial strengths, with both parties collaborating closely to shape the exhibition content.
For its 2024 debut exhibition, themed "Cities, Heritage & Crafts," THE ZHAI proudly invited Suzhou as its inaugural Featured City. All showcased works were curated from three key cultural and craft centers within Suzhou:
• Guangfu – known for its intricate carved crafts
• Zhenhu – home to traditional Suzhou-style embroidery
• Shengze – renowned for its high-quality silk textiles
Suzhou is a vital hub for the preservation of China’s traditional crafts. Of the 11 official categories of Chinese handicrafts, Suzhou alone is home to over 3,000 types across 10 categories—an extraordinary testament to its rich diversity, cultural depth, and technical excellence.
As the inaugural Featured City of 「THE ZHAI」 (China’s Origin), Suzhou beautifully showcases its deep historical roots and refined cultural identity through three key dimensions:
• Urban development (城)
• Domestic living (家)
• Material culture (物)

Opening Day Livestream / Suzhou Time
On January 18, 2024, at 12:00 local time, the “THE ZHAI: Dwell in China” exhibition officially opened at Hall 8 of the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center. The opening event was broadcast live globally through China Daily’s bilingual news platform, its official Facebook account, as well as the Suzhou Release video channel and THE ZHAI’s official Douyin account. Approximately 100,000 viewers from both China and abroad tuned in to watch the livestream.
