Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, it uses water-grown bamboo that is both resilient and smooth, ideal for crafting household wares, scholar’s objects, and decorative art.

This craft emphasizes “threads as fine as silk, textures as even as fabric.” From selecting and splitting the bamboo, to boiling, sun-drying, and finally hand-weaving, every step demands mastery and care. Techniques such as double-sided weaving, structured layering, and three-dimensional form are used to create works that balance structure with beauty.

Kesi is unique for its “continuous warp, interrupted weft” technique—each color of the weft is hand-inserted and cut off at each pattern edge, allowing for unparalleled precision and texture. The process is labor-intensive; a single inch can take days or even weeks to complete.
